What Are Zinnia Flowers?

First things first—let’s chat about zinnias, one of our favourite garden cut flowers in late summer. These vibrant blooms are not just a feast for the eyes; they’re also packed with skin benefits! Native to Mexico, zinnias are known for their bright colors and long-lasting blooms. But their beauty isn’t just skin-deep. Zinnia flowers have been used in traditional medicine for their soothing and antioxidant properties, making them perfect for a little self-care session.

Why Zinnia for Your Skin?

Zinnia flowers come with a range of benefits for your skin. Here’s why they’re awesome:

  • Antioxidant Rich: Zinnias are packed with antioxidants, which help to combat free radicals and protect your skin from environmental stressors.
  • Anti-inflammatory: The natural compounds in zinnias can help calm irritated skin and reduce redness.
  • Hydrating: When steamed, zinnia flowers release moisture that helps to hydrate and plump your skin, giving it that dewy glow.

How to Use Zinnia Flowers for a Facial Steam

Ready to indulge in a zinnia-infused facial steam? It’s super easy and a lovely way to give your skin some TLC. Here’s a step-by-step guide to get you started:

What You’ll Need:

  •  A handful of dried or fresh zinnia flowers (you can easily grow these in  your garden or you can buy them from a speciality store)
  • 1 large pot
  • 4 cups of water
  • A heat-resistant bowl
  • A clean towel
  • Optional: a few drops of your favorite essential oil (lavender or chamomile works great!)

Instructions:

  1. Boil the Water: Start by bringing the 4 cups of water to a boil in your pot. Let it boil for a minute or so, then remove it from heat.
  1. Add the Zinnia Flowers: Place your zinnia flowers into the pot of hot water. If you’re adding essential oils, drop them in now. The steam will carry the benefits of the zinnias (and the oils) directly to your skin.
  1. Prepare Your Steaming Area: Set up a comfortable spot where you can sit and relax. Place the heat-resistant bowl with the zinnia-infused water on a sturdy surface in front of you.
  1. Steam Your Face: Carefully drape the clean towel over your head and the bowl, creating a tent-like effect. Lean over the bowl (keep your face at a comfortable distance to avoid getting too close to the hot steam) and breathe in the steam. Stay under the towel for about 5-10 minutes, letting the steam work its magic. I love to take mindful deep breaths during this time.
  1. Finish Up: After your steam session, gently pat your face dry with a clean towel. Follow up with our Refresh Face Toner and Rejuvenate Face Serum to lock in all that hydration. Don't forget to drink plenty of water before and after your steam to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out.

Other Flowers That Could Be Used

We also recommend using these flowers for a floral facial steam: roses, yarrow, goldenrod, geranium, calendula, lavender, chamomile.
