Spring is around the corner now and with the warming weather, a taste of being outdoors more in our Northern land is a delightful thought. One year into this global pandemic and it has certainly turned our lives upside down but one thing is constant- the peace that comes from being in nature. I feel we have all been reminded of this especially over the past 12 months. I don’t know about you, but I find if I don’t get outside every single day for some fresh air, sunshine and just being out in the trees, then I really am missing something. It lifts my spirit, and my childrens, which we can always use. I can see the difference it makes on our mental health and understand its value and importance.
With the trees starting to bud out shortly, and wild plants returning to transform our land back to green- I hope you take notice of what is growing around you this season. Take the time to slow down, inspect that plant close to the ground, note the differences in the types of trees and all the different species that surround us. You don’t have to go far to see an abundance- just get familiar with all the wild plants growing around your yards and nearby. Learn which plants are invasive and need to be maintained (preferably chemically free!) and learn which ones are useful to you. Foraging is a very useful skill to learn. Not only are you out in nature and reaping those benefits, but you are also gathering some of the most nutritious food and medicine there is! Stay tuned for our upcoming e-book this spring where we will explore common prairie plants and how to incorporate them into our every day lives.
As for the next month of April, you can find me out looking for the first crocus flowers to appear with their familiar signs of a fresh start. Then the other plants will follow suit and show themselves. I cherish memories of going to look for crocus flowers every spring with my family. Breathing in that fresh spring air as the last of the snow melts away. The brown tones starting to have more blades of green shining through. And the warm sun shining down on us. Soak in all those spring feels.
“A single crocus blossom ought to be enough to convince our heart that springtime, no matter how predictable, is somehow a gift, gratuitous, gratis, a grace.”
David Steindl-Rast
